Jivamukti Yoga

Open Jivamukti Yoga (gee-va-mook-tee) a challenging and rigorous form of “vinyasa” flow based asana where original scriptures are cited through spoken word, sanskrit is chanted, and an inspiring musical soundtrack is a part of every class. Jivamukti is translated as “a free soul living upon the earth”. The practice of “ahimsa”, or non-harming to others, is also a strong foundation. This and all Jivamukti style classes must be taught with the permission of founders Sharon Gannon and David Life. Visit www.Jivamuktiyoga.com for more details.

Beginner Basics Jivamukti Yoga

Take advantage of a more intimate environment and focus on the fundamentals in this all inclusive class. Each week of the month features a specific concentration in this continuing order: week 1: standing poses, week 2: forward bends, week 3: back bends, week 4: combinations and inversons.

Anusara Yoga

In Sanskrit, Anusara means “flowing with the currents of grace.” Tapping into that universal flow, this class weaves together alignment and the biomechanics of the body with a playful application of yogic philosophy, so that every pose expresses our intention from the inside out. When we embrace opposites concurrently, we are able to bring about refined balance: between stability and freedom, effort and surrender, giving and receiving. It is through this union of the yoga practice that our outer body and our inner landscape begin to coalesce, making every practice a gift of the heart and a celebratory offering to others. Bring your curiosity and courage and come play! This class must be taught with the permission of it's founder, John Friend. Visit www.Anusara.com for more details.

Anusara Inspired Yoga

(on-you-sar-ra) the application of the “Universal Principles of alignment”, suitable for all levels, is a refinement of personal alignment applied to every pose. The intention is organic and expansive as it comes from the heart, inviting us to “align with the Divine”.Tantric philosophy is applied with an emphasis on community integration and the celebration of all life. This class must be taught with the permission of founder John Friend. This is an “inspired” class and not a “certified” class.

Swan River Yoga TM

“ Linked by breath, a Swan River Yoga class will have an equal emphasis on the physical and metaphysical, displaying both skillful alignment and organic flow, with intentional mantra, a philosophical theme, and personal tools to access independence in every class.” Michele Baker

Fire: fueling intention with chant/mantra
Air: communicating a philosophical theme at the beginning and throughout
Water: equal emphasis on flowing asana with skillful alignment
Earth: personal grounding tools of breath, visualzation, and/or meditation

This style's creator, Michele Baker, is Yoga Alliance Approved, and the first 8 teachers graduated in the first NOLA Yoga teacher training October 2008 ever!

Basics

Basics classes are designed to focus on alignment and standard asana postures. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions during the practice as these classes generally move at a slower pace. These classes begin to provide a deep understanding of the language and all facets of yoga.

Medium

Medium classes are offered as a vinyasa flow including basic asana postures. Postures are suitable for beginners throughout the session. A medium class is an ideal step from basics to open classes!

Open

Open classes are vigorous, and challenging vinyasa flow classes. These classes are designed to challenge those students that understand the basics, while providing alternatives for those that are new to open classes. Those practicing at all levels of asana experience are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Bhavasana

Bhavasana is a monthly Jivamukti intensive. Class time is extended in order to allow for deeper immersion into breath, mind and body practices. Open Bhavasana will explore intermediate to challenging asana, while Bhavasana basics will focus on the basics. Take this opportunity to periodically go farther with your practice.
This class is offered generally once per month. Please check the online schedule.

Thai Yoga Therapy

Thai Massage is an ancient healing art that uses gentle streches and acupressure tomaintain health within the body by clearing meridians or energy passage ways . It is a magical experience received on a padded mat, while fully clothed.
The purpose of this class is to reconnect Thai Massage with its roots in Yoga in a practical way that can build community and teach each of us how to access the healing power that exists within. We will explore ways to keep the body clear so energy may move freely, using ancient yogic knowledge and Thai massage postures. We will learn how to expand our energy so fully that all we can do with the over flow is to give forth, create, heal, uplift and inspire all those around us. We will learn Thai massage postures, in a give / receive exchange, both valuable lessons to keep energy flowing. This class will provide you with the skills necessary to give a full body Thai massage to your friends, family and loved ones.

Hot Swan River Yoga

This is a Swan River Yoga class with the heat turned up. Bring on the spice! Experience in the yoga practice is recommended when the heat is turned up.

Symbiotic Yoga is designed to increase strength, flexibility, coordination, and sensitivity in a safe and progressive way. Forsafety, spotters are always used in acrobatic sequences. This class will revitalize the body and help to control the mind, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed, while the practice of positive thinking and meditation gives increased clarity, mental power and concentration. Vinyasa Yoga

A well balanced and challenging flow based asana practice with a creative emphasis on sequencing and connection of the poses. Within the interwoven poses, yogic philosophy and devotion (bhakti) are infused so that it is absorbed on a deep cellular level. Vinyasa requires an integrative dance of the entire body, so that one feels whole in their experience. It invites one to move into the present and go with the flow.

Chakra Tuning Series

In traditional Indian medicine chakras are believed to be "energy centers" permeating from points on the physical body that interface with the subtle body (energy body). This yoga class is designed to explore those energies that exist in our chakra system. The class runs in a 9 week series, with an introduction, 7 chakras and a summary. The yoga class follows the essentials of a Swan River Level II flow class plus exploring the chakras and what they may contain. The goal of the class is to gain awareness of these centers, and then balance or liberate energy to promote optimal well being and vitality.

Reiki and Chakra Tuning Sesions with Michele Baker

Michele Baker, a level III Reiki Master, has done extensive work with energy clearing, mystical yoga techniques, visualization, and medicinal herbs to assist her in clearing the Chakras, the subtle Anatomy of the body. She is now offering private sessions for this blend of energy healing. In a session, you will do some pranayama and mantra to clear your inner rivers, and then lie down in restorative yoga poses, where Michele will then use different healing tools of smudging, aromatherapy, sound mantra therapy, and direct visualization to read your chakras and finely tune them.  Reiki will also be implimented, where Michele will call upon the chi/prana/reiki to flow with the guidance of the Reiki, Yoga, and Shamanic lineage of Spirit. You will leave a Chakra Tuning Session feeling very refreshed, nurtured, and clear, and will often receive speficic messages about the source of certain blockages in the body, which eventually lead to being the primary causes of disharmony and disease if not addressed. Get to the source and transform the seeds, for a clearing on all of the koshic levels.
1 session is aprox. up to 2 hours long and the investment is $100. Sign Up

RockasanaTM

Is a flow based class with the enjoyment of guitar riffs and themes of Rock & Roll music playlists and playful volumes. This concept is created and trademarked by Jeffrey Cohen and Andrea Boyd of the Jivamukti Yoga Center in Charleston. Wear your favorite band t-shirt. Music is louder than other classes so familiarity with vinyasa style is recommended. This class is meant to inspire emotion, release, enjoyment, and celebration. Prepare to rock in your practice and refine your ability to listen!

Aerial Yoga

Enjoy the benefits of inversion and develop flexibility and strength with Aerial Yoga.
Slings made from the silky fabric aerialists use in performance are rigged from single points in the ceiling. Students begin with a warm-up on the floor. Ground poses are then translated into aerial positions and sequences.  Aerial yoga, though new and somewhat experimental, is increasing in popularity.  Students benefit from the extra stretch the fabric provides and relish in the effects of gravity.

Take advantage of the only aerial yoga class in the city!

No yoga experience is necessary, though students should have the strength to hold themselves in a handstand against the wall.

Thursdays 4-6 PM & Saturdays 7-9PM
Classes are $18 each, $80 for a series of five, $150 for a series of ten, $200 for a series of fifteen. Purchase class packages at our online store.

**Aerial Classes are NOT included in the free intro week special. Thank you.**

12 Step Yoga

Aligning with and honoring the principles of a 12 step program in Alcoholics Anonymous, and the principles of a Swan River Yoga class, this is an invitation for a healthy, social alternative to addictive tendencies. All yogis are radical beings, and this program is an invitation to flip around any potential patterns within you into something healthy and life affirming, and feel supported in your community for doing so. This class is created by a compassionate yogi of dynamic experience, Tony Cassatt.

Kirtan

Call and response chanting to open up the subtle energy centers of the body so that we “lighten up”. Kirtan is a connection of community and the art of life. We tune in and connect with others, refining our listening, communication skills and vibration, both inner and outer. It is a perfect balance of receiving, or listening, and sharing, singing with honest emotion. In addition, each Kirtan will be catered with vegetarian food and accompanied by musicians. You are welcome to come and go as you want as we rock out!
Kirtan will take place every first Wednesday of the month with the Swan River Yoga Band, with Aaron Lind, Michele Baker, Keith Porteous, and special guests.

Meditation

Raja Yoga, the yoga of concentration invites stillness and spaciousness within our lives. It is a direct form of knowledge of the Self, as we have the chance to step back, and to take the seat of the witness, less wrapped up or bound by our actions or our lives. This invites the awareness of our True identity. From this perspective, decisions, and actions in thoughts, words, and deeds become clear. A group setting is a powerful form of inspiring magnetic consciousness.
