Mehendi Body Art
Mehendi is the art of adorning the body with designs drawn using a dye made from ground leaves of the henna plant. The dried powder is mixed with lemon juice and essential oils, creating a thick paste. The paste is then applied to the skin using one of a variety of methods, and allowed to dry. When the paste is completely dry it flakes off, revealing a beautiful stain which lasts one to three weeks.
Henna use dates as far back as the pyramids, and is still used in many cultures of the east, including those in Africa, India, Asia and the Middle East. It is often used for wedding ceremonies, the bride to be receiving elaborate designs that cover her hands and feet. Modern day finds henna on all ages, men and women alike.
Laura Sheffield, one of our certified yoga instructors, has been working with henna since 2001. She mixes her own henna paste using the highest quality powders and oils. Laura has a background in the visual arts and creates her tattoos freehand.
