Advancing Yoga Teacher Mentor Program:
100 Hour Advanced Yoga Training Mentor Program for a continuing education
( with an addition of at least 50 hours of take- home training)
This program will begin October 19, 2008 and will be on-going at the shala.
Taken with a qualified Mentor and
experienced professional yoga teacher of your choice at Swan RIver Yoga
Shala, this is a community program that offers the chance for
yoga teachers that are currently certified in any style of yoga and
teaching at any studio, to expand their skills. This is a program
giving you an opportunity to locally evolve within your yoga teaching,
experience, and understanding, gaining more self- confidence, depth,
and proficiency in your ability to serve your community, either as a
teacher, student, or member of the community.
This program will give you a place to
step up into in your training, and also give you an experienced, sacred
guide that always has your back in asking questions and needing advice
in class, personally, and socially as a yoga teacher. This will also
give you a chance to develop and be more embedded within your
influences, your personality, and style, and to align with it more
fully. Enjoy some of the most precious relationships of you life!
Requirements of a mentor:
A mentor at the shala must be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) or
Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (ERYT) with at least
5oo hours of yoga teacher training or equivalent Yoga Alliance training.
A mentor at the shala must have at least 3 years of yoga teaching
experience with at least 4 public, professional classes per
week, private teaching experience, and workshop teaching
experience, making them a full time and/or fully devoted yoga teacher.
A mentor has a consistent yoga practice of at least 4 practices per
week, daily meditation, study of the ancient and current texts on
yoga, daily devotional practices, and continual upgrades in their
training with a minimum of 50 yearly continuing educational
hours, making them a full time practitioner.
A mentor clearly inspires others in their community and is involved in karma yoga activities, the yoga of community action.
Prerequisites of the student:
1. Must be a certified yoga teacher with 200 hours training or 200 equivalent hours of Yoga Alliance training
2. Must have been a yoga student for at least 2 years, and
currently have a strong, consistent practice of at least 3-5 classes
per week in asana, and daily meditation of at least 10 minutes.
Requirements of an Advanced Apprentice:
1. Must be able to participate in teaching portions of a class with
your mentor 1 time per week (adjustments, lead sequencing, lectures,
chant, therapeutics, meditation, pranayama) with lectures and
advise after. Must commit to take 3 classes per week at the
shala, keeping a signed journal of class attendance. 1 class must
be with your mentor per week as a student.
2. Must be able to meet 1 time per week with your mentor, and give them
a private session with advanced asana understanding of challenging
variations and challenging persoal needs (injury, torn ligaments, etc)
, and listen to feedback on asana alignment instruction, giving
assists, sequencing, understanding and applying therapeutics, etc. and
articulate in-depth philosophies of yoga.
3. Must turn in 4 4 page book report essays on each of the following topics.
( a book of required and suggested reading is also given to the 200
teacher training course. it is a really good idea to read these books)
Essay topics will include:
A. The History of the main Sacred Texts of Yoga ( Rig Veda, Ramayama,
Bhagavad Gita, etc. with the sequential history, authors, background,
significance)
B. TheYamas and Niyamas of Astanga as described in Sadhana Pada of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
These 2 essays you may begin now, if you know this is a program you will be signing up for...
The next 2 will be assigned to you to finish before the course
completion, and will be personalized for your needs and intentions of
growth...
C. An assignment specifically from your mentor that will have to
do with the background of the style of yoga you are interested in
teaching or are influenced by.
D. An assignment specifically for you given to you by your mentor that will relate to Asana
4. Must be able to finish all weekly homework assignments given by
mentor and turn these in upon required due dates. (this is created by
your mentor personally for you, once your mentor observes you teaching,
either publicly or privately, and sees what homework would invite your
acceleration)
5. Must have Yoga Insurance to be able to train for this program since
you will continually be hands-on and may not officially be a teacher at
the shala.
6. Be willing to be of service in various karma yoga community activities and satsangs.
To graduate:
1. Must turn in a video of an advanced level class with succinct
language and instruction, with ALL asanas in Sanskrit, give advanced
assists, and have the ability to clearly visually demonstrate an
asana for the class with an inspiring, in -depth theme that is infused
through out the practice,leading also pranyama, meditation, and chant. This video must be accepted by your mentor before you graduate
2. Must pass a 1 week sabbatical take home exam based on
your expressed personal intentions, interests and concerns,
as well as the personalized teaching experience with your mentor.
3. Open Exam:Must be able to recite and memorize the following to the mentor without any notes or books...
A. The order of the 8 limbs of Astanga as found in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and talk about what each of them are
B. Respond in Sanskrit to 20 asanas given to you in english
C. Give a lecture on the history of the sacred texts and their background
D. Answer questions on asana based on the style of yoga you are interested in
E. Recite a prayer that is relevant to the style of yoga you are interested in
4. Must be able to give a successful, healing, skillful and loving therapeutic private session to your mentor.
5. Must publicly teach a public class of your mentor’s with
your mentor and peers as students in the class smoothly.
How to choose a mentor:
A mentor is anyone at Swan River Yoga Shala that meets the requirements
and is aligned with your desired influences. All qualified mentors at
the shala have a high level of devotion and proficiency.

This program will be more personalized to your interest of teaching
style and areas that you are currently uncomfortable/unsure, new to. It
will help you to personally balance out your strengths in all of the
teaching aspects of yoga. It is also a very hands on, interactive
program as you will be teaching portions of your mentors class publicly
each week with your mentor’s support.
This program also gives certified teachers a chance to gain hours and
experience to become a mentor at the shala. One can apply to be
accepted by the Yoga Alliance with continuing 100 educational hours.
To secure your spot, if you meet the requirements, a $500 non-
refundable deposit is required. A mentor may choose when the program
will begin, and you may work out your schedule together. The cost of
the program is $1,400
Most importantly, a mentor will be there for you always as an
experienced means of support and back up to call, email, and ask
questions to regarding your teaching experiences, names of poses,
conditions and challenges with students or yoga career, skillful
adjustments, yoga teacher life-style and social qualities, etc. This is
a relationship that you will always cherish and never forget.
