SIGNING UP FOR A CLASS OR EVENT

What classes are suitable for beginners?

Join us for any class or event called “Beginners”. The pace of “Align” classes also suits beginners while providing more of a physical challenge. Before joining a “Flow” class, an “Intro to Flow” class or event is recommended.

Additionally, classes with “Restorative” and “Yin” in the title are accessible for everyone as they focus on grounding one’s energy and finding deep relaxation.

What is the cost of a class?

Please visit our Pricing Page to learn more about class packs.

How do I register and pay for my class?
Please visit our Schedule page to register and pay for a class. In order to do so, you will need to login to your existing MindBody account or create a new one.

We also have a work-study program available for those who wish to help clean the studio and help with gardening as a trade for yoga classes. Send all inquiries about this program to verne.swanriveryoga@gmail.com.

Why should I sign up in advance?

Signing up early allows the teacher to prepare knowing you will be present. Use the Mindbody app or signup online thru the Mindbody website before you arrive whenever possible. In the unlikely event that a class cancellation is needed, all students who are signed up will be notified.

How do I purchase a Gift Certificate?

You may purchase gift certificates online or at the front desk when staff is present. To purchase online, please click here.

What is the studio's cancellation policy?

For classes: No-shows and cancellations within 24 hours of class will be charged a $5 cancellation fee. No refunds are processed for no-shows and cancellations. However, the relevant class credit will remain in the student’s account for future use.

For events, workshops & trainings – All cancellations must be made 48 hours in advance of the start time of the event. All cancellations are subject to a 20% administration fee. There are no refunds or credits granted for cancellations made less than 24 hours prior to the start of an event. Class packages are not valid for events & trainings. Please save your space for an event by signing up directly for the offering of your choice on our Events & Workshops page.

PRACTICE

What should I bring into the practice space?
Please bring all your props and water if needed. You may leave your shoes in the 1st floor foyer in our shoe cubbies, or bring them up to the classroom and store underneath the bench. Unless it is an emergency, for the benefit of your practice as well as those around you, please do not bring your phone to your mat.
What if I have an allergy to a natural product that might be used in class, such as sage, lavender, or incense?
Please tell your teacher immediately.
Hands-on assists: How do I communicate my preferences with my teacher?
If you would prefer to receive verbal guidance only (ie not to be touched) you do not need to do a thing. Please unroll your mat, set up your space, and enjoy your practice. If you would like hands-on assists, please grab one of our assist cards and place it towards the front of your mat. By using this card, you communicate your willingness to receive physical enhancements during class.

ARRIVAL

Is there parking?

Yes, parking is available in the TWO lots directly behind the Mandir. We are not welcome to park behind the building on the North side of Gayoso Street (towards Lake Pontchartrain).

How early should I arrive to class?

Please come 10 minutes early to class to check in, prepare your practice space, and unwind. Your early arrival prepares the way for meaningful practice. Please note, earlier than ten minutes before class, Swan River Teachers and Staff are cleaning and preparing the space; your respect for this schedule is appreciated. Ten minutes before class starts, you are welcome to use the props, drop into a restorative pose, or begin to warm up before class begins.

What should I do once I arrive?

Check in at the front desk, or with the teacher upon your arrival.
We encourage students to use the Mindbody App or signup online thru the Mindbody website before you arrive whenever possible.

Do I need to bring a mat?
You are most welcome to bring your own mat, but we do have previously used mats available for your practice at no charge. We also have new mats for sale.
What other props should I bring?
We recommend you bring your own eye pillow to class if you use one during Savasana. You are most welcome to bring other props, but unless we are hosting a large event, please know we have a full spectrum of props for students at our weekly classes.
What if I’m running late?
Please come and practice! Doors will be open until 10 minutes after each class’s start time. Please come into the practice space and sit quietly while the teacher begins the class. As soon as people are physically moving, you are welcome to unroll your mat and set up your spot.

THE SPACE

What is the history of the building?
The building at 2940 Canal Street was created through a grant from Andrew Carnegie to build a Public Library for the City of New Orleans in 1911. In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) commissioned New Orleans artist Edward Schoenberger to paint the back wall of the main reading room, now our main yoga practice space. This expansive mural illustrates a history of visual communication from prehistory through the invention of newsprint. The building also housed an aesthetician’s college called Moler Beauty College School. Since 2010, the “Mandir” has been Swan River Yoga’s home.
I want to get involved. Where do I start?

Swan River Yoga’s SEVA KREWE is the perfect place to start.  Seva, or service, is a form of practice in which time and effort are offered as a way of caring for the community.  For every hour of service work, whether cleaning the studio, checking in a class, or working in the garden, a free class will be provided in exchange.  Seva Krewe is open to anyone 18 years or older who has an interest in yoga. For more information or to join, contact: frontdesk@swanriveryoga.com.  Our Seva Krewe also plans to partner with community-based organizations outside of Swan River to bring yoga and meditation to underserved populations in our city.

I am interested in renting the space for my own teaching event or gathering.

Swan River rents our main studio space for private events. We also have some private wellness spaces available for monthly or daily rental. For inquiries contact: nancyswanriver@gmail.com
